Windows 10 oem vs retail reddit

Hi, I'm building a new COMPUTER this Xmas break and also deciding whether I must get Windows 10 OEM or Retail (due to price reason ofc, potential $40 savings).

You watching: Windows 10 oem vs retail reddit

I'm mindful that the OEM variation will certainly be tied to my motherboard, so if I determined to upgrade my mobo later on, I must get a brand-new windows.

However before, I check out rumors in various corners of the web saying that considering that the Anniversary upday to Win10 last year (develop 1607), the Win10 license is currently tied to your Microsoft account rather of your hardware currently. Hence, permitting someone with Win10 OEM to upgrade their motherboard and store making use of the exact same Win10 license.

Is this true? Or has anyone actually done this?

Thanks!

Don't understand for a reality. But if you ever decide to go through a new mobo I would always recommend the retail variation so you have actually that versatility. Definitely worth the $40 more dollars imo

So I acquired an oem for home windows 7 and when I upgraded to 10 in the time of the promovement I figured when I upgraded I would shed it, well once I plugged in my new develop I logged into win 10 and it was connected via my account. Now disclaimer I don't understand if I gained lucky or it was a loophole with the upgrade promovement from 7 however I had an excellent experience via oem haha.

Windows 7/8 OEM licences likewise had actually an "own use" provision in which you could buy it for your own personal usage. This has been rerelocated from the Windows 10 licence, but a knock on effect is that Windows 7/8 OEM licences have been successfully "upgraded" to retail licences.

OEM licences are still tied to your motherboard, unless you live in Germany wright here this is illegal.

Boring explanation:

The wording of the licence has actually been updated slightly so that it says "If you bought this copy of Windows as a stand-alone product then you can carry it" and people are reading right into this that OEM licences have the right to be moved.

However before, strictly speaking, end-users cannot buy OEM windows as a standalone product, considering that the own usage provision was removed from the licence at the very same time, you deserve to only legally purchase the OEM edition if you intfinish to put it onto a computer system than you then resell.

However before, since you can actually be doing this, human being will certainly still market you the OEM licence. And you have the right to still install it, but it's still going to be tied to the motherboard.

With windows 10 you can either activate it with your Microsoft account (making it tied to the account) or not and also have it tied to the hardware. Obviously it’s much better to tie it to the account if you arrangement on swapping significant hardware over the life of the pc.

If you reuse the HDD, you won't have to buy it aget. I did that when I was making my build and it turned out fine.

How did you do this?

Does this expect I can recycle an old HDD (or buy a used one that has W10) and also then just boot that? Maybe clone it to a fresh SSD?
