Dell latitude e6400 won t boot

Obviously I"d favor it to occupational again, but I"m really curious; the unit has simply sat on a shelf for 4 months. It operated fine once I put it on the shelf. What the heck happened? If I carry out acquire it functioning aget, who is to say it"s just an extremely short-lived fix and also will not go down following time?

As I remember, I doubt tright here is anypoint of worth of the lappeak. Appreciate any kind of insights one can market.

Check in the BIOS for how the SATA is set.  By default it will certainly go to RAID, if you adjusted it from RAID to AHCI and it goes ago to RAID you"ll have this worry.

Option 2 is to pull the drive and check out if you deserve to review it in another machine.

I"ve never before adjusted the BIOS. Pulling the HD was a setup although it looks like I"ll be on YouTube for a while just trying to number out exactly how to rerelocate it. Dell must have constructed the chasis for military specs. It"s not noticeable exactly how the drive is removed. The earlier cover was tricky sufficient.

I did uncover the CMOS and it"s sealed in plastic. I can most likely figure a means to still put in a brand-new battery although with my luck, that seems also straightforward and basic a repair to actually occupational. One have the right to hope.

Any other suggestions? I just don"t understand what can have actually gone wrong. The lapheight was sindicate sitting on a shelf, no relocating, no vibration, nice heated room.

Here is a theory.

Somebody knocked it off the shelf and did"nt tell you.

Seroiusly, if you have not taken it to bitys yet and also you have the right to obtain into the Bios

Make a bootable USB stick via linux on it.

Run linux off the bootable usb stick and also see if you have the right to access the C: drive on the lappeak.

If you can not then the drive is most likely dead.

I live alone, no pets, so I think we deserve to remove the laptop falling off the shelf ;-). I removed the HD (unbelievably easy) and also put it in an enclocertain and linked to an additional pc utilizing USB. No complete experimentation, however papers were easily accessible. The CMOS battery is dated Nov 2009. It"s wrapped and soldered so couldn"t test. However doing Dell Diagnostics I gained message: "Preboot Assessment Error Code 0411 the error code 2000-0411 then message: cables RTC battery not detected"  Not sure what that indicates.

I"m going on Ebay to order the battery. Who knows shipment 5-7 days if lucky. Don"t think I"ll invest various other than a few dollars and also some time. Lapoptimal has actually lived a good life.

I have actually not supplied Linux in rather a while, however did change boot order to USD then HD. That appears the finest alternate to following attempt. Any suggestions for resource and also variation of Linux? I recontact a Mint?

Thank you all for your help to day. Much appreciated.

I put Mint Linux on a thumb drive. Works fine on a Toshiba Win8.1 unit, not so fine on the Dell Latitude. Very slow-moving on acquiring to a internet site, drops the netoccupational link, however have the right to see into the laptop"s hard drive so assume that functions. Ordered the CMOS battery-went with Amazon over Ebay. Just felt it could be "fresher" and Bezos might use the money. I repeat my appreciation to all that mutual their specialization and will certainly report on the outcomes.

Rocky-

Win10 did job-related well sufficient on the 2009 lapoptimal. Please save in mind it was additionally being run by a 1947 operator. Not the a lot of demanding device needs ;-)

The "new" CMOS battery ($7 US) lastly arrived. Easy install. Didn"t job-related. I"m getting the exact same "inavailable boot drive" message. I went through "repair" and also "restore" that reresolved nopoint. System appears to be trying to boot Windows, just not making it. I"m not anxious to perform, but perhaps the Dell is destined for Mint. I do not usage the lapheight that much to appreciate or learn, however most likely much better than a boat anchor.

My latest idea-deserve to I somehow (as in EASILY) take the Win10 OS registration on this Dell lapoptimal and also transfer it to an older Toshiba lapoptimal that I have actually currently running 8.1? Then I"ll just put Mint on the Dell and forget around it.

I"m open up to ideas here.

Tright here are various versions of Mint. Cinnamon calls for even more resources than Mate or Xfce. Mint will certainly run faster off a HDD vs a USB thumb drive.

Can I someexactly how use the Success 10 on the "bad" Dell and also fill it onto the Toshiba running Victory 8.1? I would then fill Mint onto the Dell and also offer it to my son in legislation who I never favored anymeans and also use the Toshiba. I do not check out the sense of spending even more time and or money on the Dell. Perhaps I"m wrong.

The lapheight most likely came through an OEM variation of Windows installed by Dell. I doubt that licence can be moved to another machine.

Why not use the Microsoft media creation tool to downfill a bootable USB Windows 10 installation drive. If that boots OK you have the right to try a repair or possibly better a clean install. If the lappeak has actually a CD/DVD drive you can download the iso and burn a disk rather.

I thought it was still possible to do a free upgrade from 8.1 to 10 however maybe I am wrong. You might carry out a disk photo of your 8,1 to a USB external drive and then do an in area upgrade to 10. If 10 did not activate you might image the drive ago to 8.1.
